How to Choose the Best Place (Town or City)?

We often end up living in the place where we find a job, but what if you could choose exactly where you wanted to live?  What would your criteria be?  In these tough economic times, affordability, including reasonably priced housing, may be the most important element when looking for the best place to live.  And, of course, if you have children, great schools are at the top of the list.  If you are young and single, you probably want to live in a place with lots of other young, single people.

But there are other things to consider, too.  What are the tax rates?  Several states have no income tax, which sounds great, but they usually have high property taxes to make up for the lack of income tax.  Texas comes to mind.  What about transportation?  If you do not have a car or do not want to pay for one but still need to get to work, you need a town with a good public transportation system.  What about cultural amenities?  Many people take museums, concerts and libraries for granted, but not all towns have these.  There are a lot of affordable places to live, but are they worth the low cost if they do not have the amenities that make life enjoyable?   What about the political climate?  If you are a liberal, do you want to live in an ultra-conservative town and visa versa?  And just a note when it comes to affordability: a good rule of thumb is that the South and Mid-West have lower living costs than do the West, Northwest and East.

We look at all the elements that make a town a great place to live, from housing and climate to crime rates, air quality and the local library.   It's all about finding a great quality of life!
